First, the wealth distribution in the USA is already worse than even in Egypt today. In Egypt 20% of the population owns practically everything while the remaining 80% only survives. In the USA the survival has not been a problem so far only an insignificantly few die annually because of malnutrion or lack of shelter. But there are still many cases in both category each year.
We have no comparable statistics but we know that 1% of the richest in the USA owned 23% of all wealth in 2007. That was before the financial crisis started. During the crisis the uninformed lost US$ 17.5 Trillion while the welthy ones ended up getting "free" money from FED to patch their loseses.
Second, the US capitalism has developed to a perfect tool to sink the working class into forever deeper and deeper hole.
